5 Centimeter Per Second (Anime-movie)

“I still don’t know what it really means to grow up. However, if I happen to meet you, one day in the future, by then, I want to become someone you can be proud to know.”

“Maybe we tried to leave as many memories of ourselves with each other because we knew one day we wouldn’t be together anymore.”

“I see why now Tohno-kun is different from the others. Like the rocket shooting off into space, on the loneliest journey to the far end of the solar system. Because he’s always looking at something beyond me. He can never see me. I cried myself to sleep, thinking of him.”

“Yesterday, I had a dream… A dream I have had since long ago. In that dream, we had yet to turn 13. We were in a vast countryside, completely covered with snow. The lights of the houses extended far into the distance, a dazzling sight. We walked on the thick carpet of fresh snow but did not leave any footprints. And like that… ‘Someday we will be able to watch the cherry blossoms together again’. Both of us, without any doubt… That’s what we thought.”

I have a mix of feelings for this movie.  For some reason, I didn’t want to remember this feeling, but since it has centered around realism, then let me speak to it.

I feel the whole film is beautiful but sucks.  In reality, loving and longing for someone without doing anything is just like waiting for a rain in the desert island. Yes, It was so unfair while holding on to your love, the other person’s heart is moving on. Actually, I didn’t pity the Main guy at all, he could have done better to find the girl rather than being depressed and wasted his time, or he could love someone else, but when it comes to love, we cannot say this all.

Yes, this film isn’t a magical love story and happy ending thing but It was some kind of tragedy that we are experiencing from some aspects of our lives. Though it didn’t strike a deep chord in my heart, I have learned something; that I don’t want to wait in vain.

Verdict: 7/10

  1. It is a story about how distance affects/sours relationships. The assessment of the movie kinda depends on the affinity of the viewer towards the characters in the movie. Kagoshima (Kyuushu) is way too far from Tochigi. Some who didn’t find themselves in the same situation with Takaki would say that Takaki could’ve have done better. Some who have found themselves in Takaki’s stead in the past would attest that Takaki was really helpless in the situation.

All was explained poignantly in the 3rd part, on how distance drifted the two apart, yet compelled them to hold on. However, as cruelly portrayed, it was not the distance that caused them to drift apart, it was the doubt.
